Woods gets Holmes in first round

tiger-woods-all-smiles.jpg

Tiger Woods has definitely gained the world's top spot--and then some. He's played in two tournaments and won them both. He's continued to dominate the sport like no one has ever done--so the logic is that with this ranking, the seeding from 1-64 in the World Golf Championships Match Play would yield a decently easy draw for Woods. However, that's not quite the case.

Because number 45 Brett Wetterich can't play, it meant that #65 JB Holmes has gained the position to play against Woods. Holmes, who won the FBR open this year, is second on the money list in this very short season thus far and second in driving distance. While he may be 65th overall, he certainly isn't playing like it.

If Woods can beat Holmes in the first round, he'll more than likely play Canadian Mike Weir, who also finished 2007 strong. Some have argued that it doesn't matter who you put Woods up against at this point, but the fact of the matter is that these match play tournaments can take a toll mentally on you, and if Woods is tested early, it could make a difference in the late rounds. This is a matchup that I can't wait to see--the big-hitting Holmes against the dominating Woods. Should be great.
