Woman sues public course for barring her from Men's Only Event

elainejoyce.jpg

Elaine Joyce is NOT happy. The Cape Cod native, who has won over 20 club championships over several years and also won the State Club champion title for women in 2001, was told that she would not be able to play at the Dennis Pines Golf Club event for men. She has a full membership at the course. After she complained to the city of Dennis since it is a public course, it fell upon deaf ears, and Joyce has decided to file a federal lawsuit.

Some may say it is petty, but I think she has every right to challenge the idea of gender discrimination--especially in this sport which seems to treat women and minorities like we're all still wearing white powder, wigs, and acting as if we are exploring the new frontier. Whatever.

In an age where it's a great possibility that the United States could have a women's president, in an age where players like Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie have played in PROFESSIONAL men's tournaments, and especially in the sense that this is an event played on public ground, the officials of Dennis should be ashamed. I wonder what time their next Klan meeting is (and I bet it's going to be held in the clubhouse). Get over yourselves, men. If you are trying to hide your insecurities that Joyce would whoop your tail on the tees--the same longer tees that you shoot from--you are not hiding it very well. Good lord.....
