Wilson finishes strong for Zurich lead

march27_wilson_299x258.jpg

Dean Wilson had played in eight straight tournaments. Even for the best iron men of golf, that is asking alot. So he decided to take a couple weeks off heading into the Zurich Classic in Louisiana. And for the round that he shot on day 1, the rest certainly has paid off. Wilson birdied 3 of the last 4 holes to take a 1 shot lead over three others, firing a 66 at TPC Louisiana.

Defending champ Nick Watney came out with a 71, and the biggest story of the day was the wind, which wreaked havoc on the course. The fact that it was so windy is kind of a blessing and a curse--because one of the big reasons that the course is so open is due to Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, and yet the course has really plushed up with the open air as well.

Steve Elkington even remarked how great the course looked. "I think this is the best conditioned course we've played on tour this year and the best set of greens I've seen in maybe four or five years on Tour," said Elkington, who consulted on the design of the course, and says that the course is designed for the "thinking man". Interesting.
