Wie Quits to Avoid Shooting 88

We're not going to spend a lot of time around here discussing the Senior Tour or the LPGA, but I did want to mention the Michelle Wie's shenanigans this afternoon. Michelle was playing in her first tournament in months after breaking her wrist (what is it with wrists today?) and she was horrible. She was +14 through 16 holes when her manager approached her on the course and seemingly convinced Michelle to withdraw.

Michelle's stated reason for quitting was that she was experiencing pain in her wrists, but there were no signs that she was in pain all day, other than her play, which surely caused her another type of pain. So obviously Michelle's manager told her to quit, but why? Did he know that poor Michelle was hurting? Of course not.

No, Michelle's manager saw the very real possibility of Michelle dropping two more shots on the last two holes, thus giving her a score of 88 and receiving an automatic thanks but no thanks from the LPGA for the rest of the season. Turns out they have a rule that says if you shoot an 88 or worse your season is over. Good thing my local muni doesn't follow that rule.

I'm not really sure where this leaves us and the artist formerly known as the Big Wiesy, but it's not a good place. Michelle said she was thinking about the injury all day, and it was obvious her game was not even approaching an acceptable level, so why was she playing this week? And why is she scheduled to play next week? Oh, and why is she scheduled to play on the men's tour in July?

I like Michelle Wie, I really do, but I think we have a perfect storm here of a child who gets everything she wants, parents who give her everything she wants, and a totally incompetent management team. Girl needs to go away for another few months and formulate a new game plan. And if she won't, maybe one of the adults in the room can do it for her.
