Wie doesn't get Sony Exemption

Not that it was a huge surprise, but out of the four sponsor exemptions that will help kick off the PGA tour in 2008 at the Sony Open, one won't be going to Michelle Wie. Even though she has played the event since 2004, her swing coach David Leadbetter has said she's not ready to play due to her game being not up to par (get it?) and her health.

When he speaks of her health, don't look too hard for what he's meaning--she's 18, it's not like she had a stroke or anything (get it?). She tried to play several events last year despite having 2 broken wrists and endured some pretty harsh media lashings for her lack of play overall--and also Annika Sorenstam basically shunned her publicly for her decision to now play in her tournament but was noted to be practicing at the next one.

This is a good thing--Wie finally has a coach who understands timing along with getting her psyche back intact. While it may ultimately be a while before she's playing regularly, you can bet that she will be improved along with maturity issues making her a much better player.

Leadbetter noted that he didn't know how many men's tournaments, if any, she'll play this year.
