Watney comes out swingin'

I love it. Amidst all of these hyped up golfing "champions" comes a newcomer of sorts in Nick Watney, who shot a 5 under to start off the 2008 season with a bang in the Mercedes-Benz championship. It was a big surprise as Brandt Snedeker lead most of his round until a hairline crack in his driver on 17 caused a very errant shot that went into waist-high grass and caused a double bogey on the hole. Ouch.

The weather was definitely the champion of the first round, as the wind and rain made it extremely difficult throughout the afternoon. It even may have played into a one-stroke penalty that Steve Stricker took on the 13th, tour officials saying that he had addressed the ball and caused it to move--while Stricker protested, saying that the wind did it.

Geeesh. Can it get any wierder there?
