USGA Honor is not Bush League

The Bobby Jones award is given yearly by the USGA, and its main symbolism is for sportsmanship and basically promoting a positive image of golf. There was one non-golfer (translation=amateur) who had ever won the award--Bing Crosby/Bob Hope.

Now there are two.

George H.W. Bush ("wouldn't be prudent" George, not "fuzzy math" George), was awarded the prestigious title and will be honored on February 9th.

I'm very flattered to receive this award," Bush said in a statement. "Golf has meant a lot to me. It means friendship, integrity and character. I grew up in a family that was lucky enough to have golf at the heart of it for a while. My father was a scratch player and my mother also was a good golfer. It's a very special game."

Really? Bush? At least Crosby and Hope's "second life" and even entertainment lives revolved around golf. But giving a politician the award? I understand that Bush's grandfather was evidently the inspiration for the Walker Cup, but--does that mean that the legacy should be awarded?

Is this for real, or is this a publicity stunt? Either way would surprise me.
