Should anchor be suspended for remarks about Tiger?

anchors.jpg

"How do you overcome Tiger Woods?" is a question that has been asked for a while now. When Kelly Tilghman said "Lynch him in a back alley" jokingly during a broadcast, it lit a fuse behind the Rev. Al Sharpton and blogs worldwide that the comment was insensitive and racially-based. Even though Tiger himself said he wasn't offended, the Golf Channel still suspended Tilghman for 2 weeks.

Ok, I know that in some sense certain words should not be used in any context. The rant that Michael Richards went on was inexcusable. Duane "Dog" Chapman's comments were appalling. But to say that someone was being racially insensitive for using a verb that was associated with something in the past is, to me, well....being a little too PC. We're not talking about a person who is an in-your-face Shock jock like Don Imus, we're talking about a person who was the Channel's first woman anchor and has been nothing but a beacon of class. But yet she's being treated like this?

There was absolutely no malice in what she said, it just happened to be something that people put together because of one factor--race. Does Jeff Foxworthy have to have his tour pulled because of people thinking the word "redneck" is offensive? No. This is just another case of something being blown so far out of proportion in a world where on TV sex and violence reign and reality shows about lying and double-crossing people are the most popular. And yet here is Kelly Tilghman, having to take a mandatory two week vacation. Where's the justice in that?
