Oxymoron: Stricker wins second straight comeback player of year award

A day after awarding Tiger Woods the Player of the Year in one of the most unsurprising events of the year, the PGA went in the extreme other direction by awarding Steve Stricker the Comeback Player of the Year--for the second straight year.

When you're done scratching your head, I'll explain.

Ready? Ok. Well, evidently, the Comeback player of the year is rewarded for those who have returned to their previous form following a period of decline due to poor play, poor health of personal tragedy. The regulations also state that the award will be given out during years in which the Players Advisory Council feels it is warranted.

Stricker, in 2006, had not had his card the year before and ended up 34th on the money list. It was a sure thing. This year, he had his first victory in more than six years, runner-up in the FedEx Cup and No. 4 on the money list.

But still--is that really a "comeback"? That's like saying that if Phil Mickelson finished 10th one year, won it the next, that he should be in the same realm--I don't think so.

Geesh, guys, couldn't you come up with anything better?
