Ochoa, Els post big victories

ochoa1.jpg

It was Lorena Ochoa’s first tournament of the LPGA year. Would she be sharp? Would she be able to make a start that she seemed to finish at last year, when she dominated women’s golf? Well, the answer was a resounding yes. With four rounds under 70, she coasted to a 11 shot victory over second place finisher Annika Sorenstam to win the HSBC Women’s Champions tournament held in Singapore, China.

Meanwhile, in the PGA Honda Classic, the tightness of the scores after the first three rounds was a prime indicator of a showdown that would possibly occur on the last day of play. But the funny thing was—the showdown was not really between the clubhouse leaders Matt Jones, Luke Donald, and Mark Calcavecchia. While Donald stayed solid in the tempestuous PGA National, Calcavecchia and Jones withered with matching 73s.

This opened the door for Ernie Els, who had been three shots back to begin the day. While he hadn’t gone over par in the first three rounds, he hadn’t also really made any big charges—but he saved the best for last—posting a scintillating 67 to beat Donald by 1 stroke.

So while the LPGA was a yawner, it again proved Ochoa’s dominance, and while the PGA dominator Tiger Woods was not present at the Honda, it still was a great event overall.
