Nicklaus gives tip to young golfers: Mix it up

Jack Nicklaus was, in a word, dominant during his tenure on the PGA. The "Golden Bear" was a competitor that won a record 18 majors and lasted over 40 years on the pro tour, and his legacy will continue to show even after Tiger Woods is long gone that he was one of the best ever.

In an article on golf.com, Nicklaus talked about what young golfers should do to keep their game sharp--mix it up. No, that doesn't mean changing clubs or to play differently at times--it means do more than just golf. He spoke about how he thought today's kids that play golf are specialists in golf, and that the sport has turned things that people need to be that way in order to succeed. When Nicklaus was even in college, he still played all kinds of recreational sports, and he feels that was a key to his success.

Unfortunately, I don't think that his stance has much weight nowadays. Golf has taken the path that tennis took a long time ago--players who are groomed from day 1 to be pros and nothing else--including training, weight lifting, continual practice, studying the game, and so on. For someone to consider doing other things even recreation-wise, experts would tell them that they would actually be hurting their chances in the long-term. With the youth movement and players such like Michelle Wie breaking through at such a young age, don't be surprised if the professionals continue to get younger and younger and those that go the full gamut like Tiger did through Stanford be less and less.
