If there's one thing I like about certain golfers, it's fire--it's passion, it's personality. Guys like Vijay Singh, who are calculated and basically go from shot to shot and win roboticly--that's not for me. The soft-spoken ones, the ones who just "do"--I'll watch these guys, but I won't follow them. So when you talk about a guy like Steve Flesch, I'll perk right up. Why? This guy is anti-golf, the one who seems like he should be at a Yankees baseball game booing with every pitch and cheering every home run. He's emotional, and basically every shot is looked at the same by him--intensely.
So when Flesch fired a 5 under 67 on the second day to pull into the top ten for the Masters, I was a bit giddy. I mean--don't get me wrong--Trevor Immelman and Brandt Snedeker are playing great golf--but I just love the idea of Flesch winning the Masters, because it's the paradox of all paradoxes. It's the person who walked in and snuffed the rug from under the naturists of the game, the purists who scoff at anything that's less than old school--and that includes behavior on the course.
And for a tournament like this--on golf's biggest stage--why not Flesch? I mean, it's almost like the real-life version of Happy Gilmore, where Adam Sandler's irreverent character put a charge into golf, almost thumbing its nose at the establishment--and by Flesch getting the green jacket on Sunday, it could change the face of golf--at least for a bit. And sometimes, change isn't such a bad thing.
