Isenhour's excuse is for the birds

Animal cruelty like the kind that was exposed in the Michael Vick case was deplorable--not only because of the things that he and his thugs were doing to them in general, but because they were making money off it as well. In Tripp Isenhour's case, his situation didn't necessarily make him money, but his cruelty was nonetheless worthy of being shameful.

While Isenhour, who plays on the Nationwide Tour (for now), was filming a TV show with golf tips, a red-shouldered hawk landed about 300 yards away and started squawking. It was enough to distract and irritate Isenhour, who then took it upon himself to start shooting golf balls at it to try to get it to fly off, in his words. What happened then was that the migratory, protected species bird flew closer--to about 75 yards from him, and according to the television crew, muttered something like "I'll get him now".

He continued to pelt balls at the bird, and finally the bird was hit hard enough that it fell to the ground bleeding, and ultimately died. Now, suddenly, Isenhour is so "traumatized and upset" of what happened with the bird that he has publicly apologized for the incident. The Humane Society of America isn't buying it, and I would guess PETA will join right in. While the crew can certainly be shamed for not stepping in, it sounds and even on tape it looks like Isenhour was intentionally trying to hurt the animal, even though he says he wasn't.

Whatever. How about this--let's take Tripp out to the range and have a bunch of people hit golf balls at him from 75 yards away and see what happens. Something tells me he won't be doing anything like that again.
