India a boon to professional golf

india-golf-courses.gif

India is one of the most populous countries in the world, and the fastest-growing sport there is golf. More courses are springing up and being planned it seems faster than ever, and the country only held one major tournament last year, but is already scheduled for 3 this year. Previously, China had been the target for so many entrepreneurs in the budding East, but now India, with its deep pockets, is starting to look like the go-to place for the Asian and European tours. With local golfers tasting success overseas sparking a surge in interest at the same time that incomes are rising the European and Asian Tours considered it the right moment to dive in.

The irony is that India is one of the poorer countries in the world, and golf is still a very expensive hobby, yet its popularity is soaring. The Indian Masters will be the richest event ever in the country, and the prospects continue to grow.

The question is--how will the PGA tour react? Obviously players like Tiger Woods played in the Dubai event a couple of weeks ago and he is building a course there, and if the world follows suit, it could mean a lot of different things on a global scale.
