Garcia DQ'd for Scoring Snafu--*Cue Rolling of Eyes*

Sergio Garcia has had quite the frustrating year, discounting even the playoff loss at the British Open. Even though he wasn't in the thick of the field, he now has been disqualified from the PGA Championship for a scoring error he did not catch before signing the card. Garcia, obviously unhappy about the situation, has not really commented extensively, while the person who made the error, Boo Weekley, has been upset about his error but not necessarily apologetic.

Every athlete has their own responsibility within their own sport: basketball players have to check in before they go into the game, baseball pitchers have to warm up in the bullpen before they go into the game, the list goes on and on. However, in no other sport that golf are athletes not only required to keep score, but check their score before signing off. Call it tradition, call it prestige associated with the game in terms of "snobby civility", I call it dumb. Why should golfers, who have to deal with throngs of fans, unreal courses, media coverage and the like--be required to also keep score? It doesn't make sense--the scoreboards at these events are as large as jumbotrons, so why should it be that a card that is "attested" at the end of the event be what can kick a person off an event? The short answer is--it shouldn't.

Some naturalists of the game will disagree with my thoughts because this is something that should be innate to golfers, a responsibility that is more true to the game in its most simplistic turns. At one time it may have been, but not any longer: it's bad enough when a golfer is having a rough day or tournament, much less having to face the fact that you can't even play any more because some bonehead wrote something down wrong three hours earlier and you don't have the memory to stop it before signing off and heading into the clubhouse for a beer. Wake up, PGA! Time to change your "rules".
