First Day At the Open

One day in the books at the Open, and the USGA's infamous setup at Oakmont is inflicting real pain on this years contestants.

Phil Mickelson was the first to incur the wrath of Oakmont when he injured his wrist hitting out of the rough a few weeks ago during a practice round. Today Phil called Oakmont a "physical hazzard", which is dead on.

For years the USGA waged psychological warfare against golfers with high rough, slick greens and deep bunkers, but this year the USGA, with an eager assist from the masochists at Oakmont, went a step further. No longer happy to just scare the living shit out of its players, the USGA has decided to physically torment them.

You already know about Phil's wrist, but consider these other injuries:

Ian Poulter broke his ankle when he slipped on the super slick 17th green.

Masters' champ Zach Johnson was infected with rabies when he was bitten by multiple squirrels that had established a colony in the rough lining the 8th fairway.

KJ Choi, Stuart Appleby and Fred Funk all incurred bruises, cuts and abrasions when they fell victim to the trip wire the USGA placed in the left rough along the 13th fairway.

Luke Donald broke a rib when a USGA official slugged him in the chest for "taking way to long" to select a club for his approach to the 3rd green.

And perhaps most shockingly, Davis Love III contracted Hepatitis C from the greenside bunker on the 9th hole in an incident that has still not been satisfactorily explained.
