Can Sorenstam regain top position?

Annika-Sorenstam.jpg

For years it seemed Annika Sorenstam would rule golf; and for years, she did. She has won 69 LPGA tournaments and is a shoo-in for the hall of fame. At 37, not many people could ask for more.

But she is.

After having one of her worst years ever on the tour as upstarts Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer, and others grabbed the LPGA spotlight, Sorenstam is vying yet again for the top position in the sport. Citing that she has no more injury concerns, she plans on playing 20 to 22 tournaments this year, which will put quite the physical toll on her. However, if there's anyone who has the drive and ambition, it's Sorenstam. She should be able to get quite a jump on the top position considering that Ochoa, who dominated last year, is skipping the entire Hawaii swing of the tour. If Sorenstam can come out guns blazing, all of the newbie stars may be looking up at her once again.

It's a good thing for the LPGA to have this kind of parity, though, because while Tiger Woods dominates men's golf, it's not as in need of the public eye as the woman's professional tour is. Having Ochoa, Creamer, and the like start to come onto the scene with fresh faces and fresh wins has been a boon for the tour, and now it can only get better if Sorenstam improves her level of play as well.
