Butch Takes a Shot at Tiger

Tiger Wood's former swing sensei Butch Harmon dropped a bomb on his old pupil today when he predicted that his current student, Phil Mickelson, can and will surpass Tiger as the world's number one player.

Butch has always been known as a guy that likes to talk, so much in fact that it's generally assumed that his dismissal from the Wood's camp was due to his over-capitalizing on the fame that teaching Tiger brought him. Tiger felt like Harmon took a little too much credit for el Tigre's success, so he got rid of him and then went 3 years without winning a major.

Despite Tiger's major successes the last few years, his long game is nowhere near as good as it was when he was working with Butch. Luckily his iron game, short game, and putter are still better than anyone else's on the planet, and he's rode that to great success.

Can Butch turn Phil into the world number one? Absolutely. Phil has as much talent as Tiger. You heard me. Tiger had the benefit of great teaching from an early age, but Phil has always had questionable mechanics and a poor work ethic. If Phil gets himself in shape, refines his mechanics, and learns to play a little more conservatively he'll definitely have a shot at knocking off Tiger in the next few years. Wouldn't that be fun?
