Breaking down Tiger's breakdown

Geoff Ogilvy lead wire to wire. It was a great feat. But of course, the biggest news of the CA Championships at Doral was that the King had fallen. Tiger Woods was beaten. While golf is a sport where someone who wins several tournaments in a year is like a god, Woods has basically set expectations of winning every time he sets foot on a golf course. And while Woods would probably agree that is the way it should be, was Ogilvy's win an anomaly of this or is it simply that Tiger didn't get everything he had gotten in his previous wins?

When I say he didn't get everything, I am not referring to something inferring that Tiger's streak was all luck, but when you do look back at several of the things that occurred during the streak, it wasn't as if Tiger absolutely beat the crud out of everyone--it required huge putts in the early round of the WGC Match play, it took a putt that curled into the hole at Bay Hill, and it took a huge putt at Cog Hill. Now, those are all pressure packed situations that I would probably pee my pants if I was involved in, and it is extraordinary to have accomplished this, but let's just say that Woods' streak was about 80% skill and 20% luck.

Ogilvy had to endure question after question about Tiger, etc., all week long, yet he kept his composure and he continued to make shot after shot. He was steady, the kind of player that Tiger usually breaks in half, and he won the tournament. Now, let's not all say that suddenly Woods is off his game; yes, he looked human, but he's still the one to beat every tournament he says he will play in. And until he loses his edge and goes on as long a streak that he did when he was winning, players like Ogilvy better get used to the questions.
