Boo! US jumps out to lead in World Cup

Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum, who were really never considered any threat to the title at the World Cup in China, have jumped out to an early lead at 11 under. Why the surprise? Well, mostly because many thought that the depth of US Golf was not comparable, since 13 other "better" players declined.

However, you can't discount chemistry. Weekley and Slocum are good friends and even attended high school together. To have that kind of mentality in these conditions is crucial--it takes a little of the edge off and allows you to play looser. While they are not dominating--the Canadian team of Mike Weir and Wes Heffernan were tied for fourteenth but only three shots back--the fact that they were even able to be "in" the thick of things is great, much less in the lead.

The tournament, which has been around for over 50 years, is normally shifted all over the world, but will soon begin a 12-year run in Mission Hills. The PGA hopes that by doing this there won't be a need for the top players to decline the invitation for their country since it will be in a more static environment. I say let Weekley and Slocum keep playing! :)
