Blast from the past: Couples leading at Bay Hill

mar13_couples_299x277.jpg

With a performance that really--honestly--no one could have predicted, Fred Couples shot an amazing 65 in the opening round at Bay Hill (Orlando, Fla), and took the lead. Even though Couples is a proven winner and a veteran who knows the game inside and out, he still has the awww-shucks "I'm not the guy to beat" statement after the round.

The last time Couples shot this well was 16 years ago--and then he was the number 1 guy in the world. Ironically, the guy who IS number one in the world--Tiger Woods (like I needed to remind you)--struggled in the open round, and--GASP--looked almost like he was human. Almost.

He didn't shoot THAT badly, just even par--5 shots back from Couples. But it was almost weird to see him struggle with his short game, from the wedges that he couldn't hit the green with to his putter that has been golden of late but couldn't get the "midas touch" today. But don't fret--even though Couples has started off blazing, the chances that he'll go wire to wire or even be in the top 5 when it is all said and done is not likely, while Woods still has a shot to win this tournament and keep his streak alive. Either way, it's good to see this parity in golf, although I guess that's why they play four rounds, eh? :P
