Baird grabs second round Zurich lead

baird.jpg

254 starts. That's how many tournaments Briny Baird has entered on the PGA Tour. And that's also how many times he has not won a tournament. Ouch. But--the Zurich Classic has been a haven for first-time winners, and now Baird, who posted a 69 in the second round, now takes a 1 shot lead into the third round at TPC Louisiana. The question is--can he hold up?

If he starts off tomorrow like he did today, the answer would probably be no--on his opening drive, he pushed it right and hit the cart path. He was able to recover from that, but missed a par putt from about six feet. But he regrouped and was able to pull ahead of Peter Lonard, who shot a 70 for the day.

Baird may have not won a tournament, but he's definitely been close--including last week, when he was leading going into the last round of the Puerto Rico Open. Ok, not the best of competition, but it's competition nonetheless. And when you consider that Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk did not make the cut for this tournament, you've got to give credit where credit due.
