Adam Scott Fizzles While Woody Austin's Shirt Rallies to Win in Memphis

Woody%20Austin.jpg
Although John Daly's personal life was a lot more interesting, the guys on the PGA did finish up the Stanford St. Jude's Championship in Memphis today. Woody Austin won with an impressive final round 62 to blow away the field. That 62 included a few long putts, a hole-out for eagle and a chip in from off the green. By the time he reached the home stretch it was all over.

Why? Well, because his stiffest competition, Adam Scott, completely imploded. He had a chance to keep things interesting but missed a five-foot par putt on 13 and then hit in the water and three putted on 14 to all but end his challenge. Adam birdied the next hole before bogeying the final three.

For you keeping score at home, this is the second week in a row that Scott had a great chance to win on Sunday only to play poorly and let that chance slip. It's sad because Scott is definitely one of the guys who seem to have the tools to challenge Tiger, but he certainly hasn't flashed the stones to do it yet. At this point you'd have to say Scott is the ringleader of a couple dubious groups on the PGA Tour that haven't been able to step it up despite showing glimpses of brilliance: the new wave of Australians and the under-30 crowd.

What's hard to understand is how a guy like Woody Austin could so outclass a guy like Adam Scott in the final round. I see you there, nodding in agreement. After all, Scott possesses what may be the best swing in golf and a number four world ranking, and Woody Austin is a long-suffering journeyman best known for once breaking the shaft of his putter on his forehead. But that's not even the point I want to make here.

The edge that Adam Scott should have over Woody Austin is best expressed by considering the one bit of data that best indicates PGA Tour success. That data, that ultimate arbiter of skill, is a comparison of each player's apparel sponsor. That's right, how these guys are coifed should generally let you know who's going to win. In this particular case you've got Scott decked out in the smoothest gear on tour - all Burberry. Then there's Woody Austin who's sponsored by Tabasco Golf Shirts, which, from what I understand, come free with every purchase of a five ounce jar of Tabasco’s Smoked Chipotle Sauce. The shirt Woody wore today was probably the coolest shirt Tabasco makes, which still ranks it as the worst shirt anyone in the field was wearing.

Considering the vast "apparel gap" on display today, there should have been no way that a guy like Woody wins. But that's why the play 'em folks.

So who do I expect to win next week's US Open? George Clooney of course

You are missing the bigger picture. WE expect the Tabasco shirt to look stupid. I had a much harder time looking at the GREEN Cleveland hat. How mad is Cleveland that they had to make that ugly thing to match his shirt?
