A Tiger, a Duck, Two Black Bears and a Furyk

Cabrera.jpg

No, that headline is not the new Pixar flick this Summer, but a reference to today's festivities at Oakmont.

The day started strangely when two black bears were spotted around the 7th day before network coverage began, sadly depriving us of Johnny Miller's anaylsis of their game ("It sounded like Mama Bear hit it fat, right Rog?"). There were unverified reports that one of the bears attacked Rory Sabattini after he said the bear looked "as beatable as ever."

After that, it was fairly boring, unless you really like 6 foot par saves. Angel Cabrera, known as el Pato or the Duck, made some great birdies on the beginning of the back nine to race out to a 3 shot lead. He then perservered 2 late bogeys, a run by Jim Furyk and a promised run by Tiger that never materialized.

Cabrera is a guy that golf fans have heard of, but a lot of casual fans have not. He's always been a good world player that's never cashed in at a big event. It will be interesting to see if can win a few more big ones in the future. It will also be interesting to see if now commits to the US Tour. Not only are the purses bigger over here, he'll be able to swing a better sponsor than South African Airlines, which was prominently emblazened on his shirt.
