2007 and Phil Mickelson: Getting up and down

pmick.jpgPhil Mickelson became famous for his well-executed flop shot, which he worked like magic to get him up and down seemingly at will.

2007 seemed like one big flop shot for Mickelson, who had to endure the first half of the year amidst media firing back and forth about what Mickelson would be without coach Rick Smith. He silenced them by winning the Players Championship in convincing fashion, casting aside all doubt that any of his game had subsided. And then during the FedEx playoffs, he battled Tiger Woods to win the Duetsche Bank Championship. He was truly at the top of the flop shot coming out of the bunker.

But then, the shot went long and over the green. During the post-tournament "winning" interview, Mickelson went on a whiny tirade against PGA commish Tim Finchem, and suddenly, the normally classy Phil was looking like a little baby. And then he decided that he would not play in the next week's tournament.

Flop shot indeed.
